Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The North Bergen Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps throughout North Bergen, and in most cases the swap is done the same visit we diagnose it. A typical Gelco cap installation in this area runs $285 to $520 depending on flue size and whether the mounting bracket survived. You’ll usually discover the problem the morning after a storm when you find cap fragments in the yard, or when you notice water streaks down the chimney chase, or when a squirrel takes up residence because the mesh gave way.

Gelco builds a solid cap. But in North Bergen, with the salt air off the Hudson and the nor’easters that blow through every winter, the mounting hardware tends to fail before the cap itself does. We see it every season: the hood is fine, the bracket is rusted through, and the whole assembly is hanging by a thread over a flue that’s now wide open to rain. That’s the phone call we get.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Most Gelco caps we encounter in North Bergen fall into two families: the standard single-flue caps with the expanded stainless mesh band, and the multi-flue caps for chimneys serving two or more appliances. The single-flue units usually mount with a pressure-fit bracket that tightens against the inside of the flue tile; the multi-flue units sit on top of the crown and use corner brackets. Both share the same failure point in our climate, which is the hardware, not the hood.

If you want to identify what you have before calling, look for the Gelco stamp on the underside of the hood when the cap is off, or check the original paperwork if you kept it. The cap’s outside dimension is the measurement that matters: single-flue Gelcos are made for 7-inch through 13-inch flue openings, and if you order a cap that’s even a half-inch too wide, the mesh skirt won’t seat and the pressure bracket won’t bite. The OEM versus aftermarket question is worth settling honestly: for Gelco specifically, we prefer the OEM cap if the hood is in good shape and only the bracket failed, because the aftermarket “universal” brackets often don’t match the original hole spacing. If the whole cap needs replacing, a quality aftermarket stainless cap with the same outside dimension usually serves you as well for twenty to thirty percent less. We’ll show you both numbers and let you choose.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Here’s what we see when a Gelco cap installation in North Bergen is on its way out:

  • Cap fragments in the yard or on the roof. This one’s obvious, but a lot of people assume the neighbor’s kid threw something. If you see a curved piece of stainless mesh or a shard of cap hood, it’s yours. The bracket let go. The cap is either gone entirely or about to be.
  • Water stains on the ceiling below the chimney chase. Rain is getting in and running down the interior masonry. It reads as a roof leak most of the time. It’s often the missing or compromised cap.
  • Rust trails under the cap hood visible from the ground. If you can see orange or brown streaking on the flue tile below the cap, the original steel fasteners are corroding and the runoff is staining the masonry. It gets worse from there.
  • Debris or acorns in the firebox. The mesh band finally tore or pulled away from the hood. Once the opening is larger than a quarter, squirrels and leaves are in. A Gelco with intact mesh has openings small enough to keep everything out. A failed Gelco doesn’t.
  • A rattle when the wind kicks up off the Palisades. The pressure bracket loosened over freeze-thaw cycles and now the cap lifts and drops against the flue tile. It won’t seat itself again. It just chews the tile edges until something breaks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here are honest numbers for North Bergen. A straight cap swap on a single-flue chimney, where the old cap is removed and a new or rebuilt Gelco-compatible cap goes on, runs $285 to $380 depending on flue diameter and whether we need a fascia or custom bracket. A multi-flue cap replacement runs $420 to $520 because the cap is larger and the mounting often requires drilling into the crown and sealing the new fasteners. If the crown under the cap is spalling or cracked, that’s extra work and we’ll quote it separately, not bury it in the cap price.

Every cap installation includes removal and disposal of the old unit, inspection of the flue tile and crown we’re mounting to, new stainless hardware, and a camera check afterward so you can see the cap is seated. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If anything slips, one call and Wendell is back.

DIY or Call Us?

I’ll tell you the same thing I’d tell a neighbor over the fence. If you have a single-story chimney, a safe ladder, and a healthy respect for working at height, you can inspect the cap yourself. You can take photos, check the bracket for rust, and measure the flue opening if the cap is already off. What I don’t recommend is doing the replacement yourself on a two-story roofline in North Bergen where the pitch is steep and the wind off the river doesn’t quit. We’ve pulled too many homeowners off extension ladders with a cap in one hand and a drill in the other.

The other reason to call us is the mounting surface. If the flue tile is cracked or the crown is soft, a brand new cap won’t hold. We fix the surface first, then mount the cap. You can’t see that from the ground. You can from the roof. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (848) 361-3227 and we’ll come take a look.
