• A smell like wet ash or sulfur after a rain. Water follows the crack into the chimney and picks up creosote smell on the way down. If the smell is worst after a storm, the liner is likely the entry point.
• Smoke drifting back into the room on startup. A cold liner with a crack will not draw. The fire has to heat the flue enough to create draft, and until it does, smoke seeps through the split instead of going up.

You can check a few things yourself. Look in the firebox for rust flakes. Look up from the cleanout door with a flashlight and see if you can spot daylight where light should not be. Check the exterior brick for white staining. What you cannot safely do is pull and re-feed a liner. It means working on the roof, manhandling coiled stainless through a clay flue, and making connections that have to be gas-tight. If the liner is feeding a furnace or water heater, a bad connection sends carbon monoxide into the house instead of up the chimney. That is not a DIY risk worth taking.
