Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The North Bergen Owner’s Guide

If you have a Famco chimney cap that’s rusted through, dented by a falling branch, or simply missing after a windstorm, we stock Famco-compatible caps and install them across North Bergen, typically for $225 to $410 installed depending on the model and flue size. Our crews carry the most common Famco models on the truck, so the job is usually completed in a single visit, about 45 to 90 minutes. Most North Bergen homeowners discover the problem one of two ways: water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, or sparks and debris blowing down into the firebox. Either way, the cap did its job until it couldn’t, and replacing it quickly prevents a minor cap issue from turning into a water-damage repair.

Famco makes a solid, widely used cap. We’ve been installing their products since 1999, and the failure we see most often in North Bergen isn’t the cap itself. It’s the mounting hardware. The galvanized set screws and brackets that hold the cap to the flue tile are exposed to rain, snow, and the temperature swings off the Hudson. They corrode first. The cap might still look fine from the ground, but if a screw has snapped or the band has rusted through, the whole assembly can lift off in the next nor’easter. That’s the check we run first.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco’s chimney cap line breaks down by flue type and mounting style. Their single-flue caps, like the F series, slip over a square or rectangular clay flue tile and are secured with set screws through a stainless band. Their multi-flue caps cover the entire chimney crown and anchor into the crown masonry with lag bolts. And their round caps fit round metal flues, common on masonry heaters and some gas setups. If you have the original box or paperwork, there’s a model number on a sticker, but most people don’t. We identify the right cap by measuring the flue tile: outside length and width for the F series, crown dimensions for multi-flue, inside diameter for round.

One compatibility gotcha with Famco caps worth knowing: their F-series caps are designed for standard flue tile dimensions like 8×8, 8×12, and 13×13. Older North Bergen homes sometimes have custom or oversized tiles that don’t match any stock size. If someone sold you a cap that’s “close” and shimmed the gap with mesh, it’s going to move. Famco’s specs are not forgiving on fit. In those cases, we order a custom-band version or recommend a better-fitting alternative from our other stocked lines, like Copperfield or Olympia. If you’re not sure what you have, take a photo of the flue from above if you can safely get to the roof, or have us do a free measurement when we’re in the area. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Famco, so if a Famco workaround fits your chimney better than a Famco replacement, we’ll tell you straight.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water on the smoke shelf or firebox floor after heavy rain. The cap’s spark arrestor screen is clogged with creosote or the top hood has rusted through, letting rain drain straight down the flue instead of out through the mesh sides.
  • The cap is tilted or shifted after a wind event. One or more set screws have snapped from corrosion. The cap is still on the flue, but it’s hanging by a thread. Next storm lofts it into a neighbor’s yard.
  • Rust streaks running down the flue tile or chimney face. That’s the mounting band degrading and washing iron oxide down the masonry. On a brick chimney in North Bergen, those streaks are hard to remove once they set.
  • Birds, leaves, or twigs inside the firebox. The mesh screen has torn or pulled away from the hood. Once the screen opens, animals get in, build nests, and create an entirely different and messier blocking problem.
  • The spark arrestor mesh is bowed or sagging. Years of heating, cooling, and creosote accumulation have deformed the mesh. It’s no longer catching sparks. It’s catching water and debris.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In North Bergen, a Famco single-flue cap installed runs $225 to $310 for standard tile sizes. Multi-flue caps run $310 to $410 depending on the crown dimensions and the condition of the existing anchor points. If the flue tile itself has to be rebuilt to accept the new cap cleanly, that’s additional and quoted separately after we see it.

Every install includes the new cap, stainless hardware, removal of the old cap and any remaining bracket debris, a visual check of the exposed flue tile, and a photo report of the work. We don’t charge a trip fee for calls within Hudson County. If you have a quote from another company, we’ll give you a free second opinion on it. And if the price we state on the phone is the price you pay at the end. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the cap installation. If the cap shifts, loosens, or shows a problem within 90 days, call and Wendell or his crew will come back and make it right, no charge, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

If you have a single-story home, safe roof access, and a flue you can reach without getting on a steep pitch, checking a cap is within reach for some homeowners. You can look for rust at the base, wiggle the cap gently to feel for movement, and snap photos from above. But if the roof is steep, the chimney is on a second story, or you’d need to be on a ladder for more than a couple of minutes, that’s not the place to figure out your limits. It’s never worth a fall. Every year, homeowners in North Bergen get hurt on roofs saving a few hundred dollars on a cap swap.

The install itself matters more than it looks like it should. A cap has to sit flush on the tile, screws have to be set at the right points, and the cap has to carry a 70-mile-an-hour wind gust without lifting. If you can’t confidently stand on your roof and work at the flue for half an hour with both hands free, call (848) 361-3227 and let us handle it. We’ll tell you on the phone if it sounds like a simple swap or something that needs a closer look.
